This our artisan made quilt is thinner and lighter than the standard kake futon. Its amount of cotton filling is half of that of the standard kake futon. In Japan, this is usually used to adjust the temperature in your futon or bed when the season is changing from spring to summer, summer to autumn. It is when standard kake futon is too hot to sleep, but summer blanket is too cold. You can also use this when your bed room is too cold because of the air conditioner in summer time. Though this is called “Hadakake – cover the skin”, we recommend to use kake futon cover to maintain it clean. What's "Wazarashi Cotton"? In modern times the bleaching process involves dyeing and processing the fabric while stretching it through a machine. However, the traditional manufacturing method, wazarashi, does not pull or stretch the cloth; instead, it is slowly and thoroughly processed for about three days in a cauldron, almost completely removing any impurities, without stressing the fiber. To get the appearance of pure cotton wazarashi fabric, pigments / fats, impurities etc. attached to the cotton are removed, taking the textile's natural form to the very limit. It subtly smells of the oil of cotton. It's difficult to describe what it is like. It'll be removed eventually in a couple of weeks. Most of the people don’t mind it but some people who is sensitive to smell might mind. Q. How long does a futon mattress last? A. Futon mattress (shiki futon) lasts for 3 years and futon quilt (kake futon) lasts for 5 years in general. They eventually lose the softness by being pressed by body.
